Critical success factors are: Precise needle placement, avoidance of critical structures and short intervention time. Navigation solutions for ultrasound-based needle insertions have been presented but did not find widespread clinical application. This can be attributed to the complexity and higher costs introduced by additional tracking related equipment. Using a new compact electromagnetic (EM) field generator (FG), we present the first navigated intervention method that combines field generator and ultrasound (US) probe into a single mobile imaging modality that enables tracking of needle and patient. In a phantom study, we applied the system for navigated needle insertion and achieving a hit rate of 92% and a mean accuracy of 3.1 mm (n=24). These results demonstrate the potential of the new combined modality in facilitating US-guided needle insertion.

متن کاملThe Effects of Ultrasound-Guided Dry Needling on Patients With Myofascial Pain Syndrome: A Review Study
Objectives: Dry Needling (DN) is a novel and effective intervention for patients with Myofascial Pain Syndrome (MPS). Some characteristics, such as needle penetration depth, needle insertion into the target muscle, and trigger points must be identified in this intervention. The Ultrasound (US)-guided DN is a technique that involves needle insertion at the site of injury and the simulation of ti...
متن کاملThree-dimensional ultrasound-guided robotic needle placement: an experimental evaluation.
BACKGROUND Clinical use of image-guided needle placement robots has lagged behind laboratory-demonstrated robotic capability. Bridging this gap requires reliable and easy-to-use robotic systems. METHODS Our system for image-guided needle placement requires only simple, low-cost components and minimal, entirely off-line calibration. It rapidly aligns needles to planned entry paths using 3D ult...
متن کاملPerformance Accuracy of Hand-on-needle versus Hand-on-syringe Technique for Ultrasound-guided Regional Anesthesia Simulation for Emergency Medicine Residents
INTRODUCTION Ultrasound-guided nerve blocks (UGNB) are increasingly used in emergency care. The hand-on-syringe (HS) needle technique is ideally suited to the emergency department setting because it allows a single operator to perform the block without assistance. The HS technique is assumed to provide less exact needle control than the alternative two-operator hand-on-needle (HN) technique; ho...
متن کاملTracked Ultrasound in Navigated Spine Interventions
Ultrasound is an increasingly popular imaging modality in image-guided interventions, due to its safety, accessibility, and low cost. But ultrasound imaging has a steep learning curve, and requires significant coordination skills from the operator. It is difficult to interpret cross-sectional anatomy in arbitrary angles, and even more challenging to orient a needle with respect to the ultrasoun...
